How to Transfer WhatsApp from Android to iPhone (2026 Guide)

WhatsApp is the one thing that does not move easily when you switch from Android to iPhone. Your photos and contacts are simple, but WhatsApp stores its chats in a format that does not carry across on its own. There are two real ways to move it in 2026: Apple's free Move to iOS app, which only works while you are first setting up the iPhone, and a desktop tool that moves your chats after setup without wiping the phone. Here is how both work, and which one fits your situation.

Why WhatsApp is harder to move than your other data

Android and iPhone store WhatsApp data differently, and the backups are not compatible. On Android, WhatsApp backs up to Google Drive. On iPhone, it restores from iCloud. The two do not talk to each other, so you cannot just restore your Google Drive backup onto an iPhone. That is why moving contacts or photos is easy but WhatsApp needs its own method. You have two that actually work, below.

Method 1: Move WhatsApp after setup without resetting (recommended)

If your iPhone is already set up, with your photos, apps, and accounts on it, this is the method you want. A desktop tool moves your WhatsApp across while leaving everything already on the iPhone untouched. The tool most people use for this in 2026 is Tenorshare iCareFone Transfer. It backs up WhatsApp from your Android and rebuilds it on your iPhone directly, with no factory reset.

Our Recommendation
iCareFone Transfer
WhatsApp Transfer Tool

iCareFone Transfer runs on your Windows PC or Mac and moves your full WhatsApp history, chats, photos, videos, voice notes, and WhatsApp Business, from Android to iPhone without a reset. Nothing already on the iPhone is erased. According to Tenorshare it supports the latest iOS 26 and Android 16, and the free trial lets you check the transfer before you buy.

How to transfer WhatsApp with iCareFone Transfer

The whole process takes around fifteen minutes for a normal chat history, longer if you have years of media. You do it from your computer with both phones plugged in.

  1. Download and install iCareFone Transfer

Install it on your Windows PC or Mac, open it, and choose the WhatsApp transfer option, then Android to iOS. The free trial lets you run through the steps before paying.

  2. Turn off Find My iPhone, then connect both phones

On the iPhone, go to Settings, tap your name, then Find My, and turn off Find My iPhone (the transfer needs it off). Now connect both the Android and the iPhone to the computer with USB cables. Tap Trust on the iPhone, and enable USB Debugging on the Android if asked.

  3. Back up and verify your WhatsApp

The tool creates a WhatsApp backup from your Android, then asks you to verify your WhatsApp account. You do this with the 64-digit encryption key or an SMS code, so WhatsApp confirms the chats are yours.

  4. Log in to WhatsApp on your iPhone

When prompted, sign in to WhatsApp on the iPhone using the same phone number as your Android. This matches the account so your chats land in the right place.

  5. Start the transfer and wait

Click Start and keep both phones connected until it finishes. When it is done, open WhatsApp on your iPhone and your chats, media, and voice notes are all there, sitting alongside everything else already on the phone.

Keep both phones awake A large WhatsApp history can take a while. Keep both phones plugged in and unlocked during the transfer, and do not open WhatsApp on either phone until it finishes. Turn Find My iPhone back on once you are done.

Method 2: Move to iOS (the free way, setup only)

Apple's Move to iOS app can transfer WhatsApp for free, and it works well, but with one hard limit: it only runs during the initial iPhone setup, at the Move Data from Android screen. If your iPhone is already set up, there is no workaround. You have to erase it (Settings, General, Transfer or Reset iPhone, Erase All Content and Settings) and set it up again to use this method. You also need the same phone number on both phones, iOS 15.5 or later, and a recent WhatsApp backup. If you are setting up a brand new iPhone anyway, this free route is a fine choice. If your iPhone is already in use, Method 1 saves you from wiping it.

FAQ

Can I transfer WhatsApp from Android to iPhone without resetting the iPhone? +
Yes. Apple's free Move to iOS method only runs during setup, so it forces a factory reset if your iPhone is already in use. A desktop tool like iCareFone Transfer moves your WhatsApp across without wiping the iPhone, which is the reason most people use it after setup.
Does the free Move to iOS method transfer WhatsApp? +
Yes, but only during the initial iPhone setup, at the Move Data from Android screen. It needs the same phone number, iOS 15.5 or later, and a recent WhatsApp backup. If your iPhone is already set up, you must erase it and set it up again to use this method.
Can I restore a WhatsApp Google Drive backup to an iPhone? +
No. WhatsApp on Android backs up to Google Drive, but iPhone restores from iCloud, and the two are not compatible. A Google Drive backup cannot be restored onto an iPhone, which is why a direct transfer method is needed.
Does it move WhatsApp Business chats too? +
Yes. iCareFone Transfer moves both regular WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business chats, along with photos, videos, and voice notes. You log in with the same number on the iPhone so the account matches.
Does it work on the latest iPhone and Android? +
Yes. According to Tenorshare, iCareFone Transfer supports the latest iOS 26 and Android 16. We tested it moving WhatsApp to an iPhone 17 running iOS 26.4, and the existing photos and apps on the iPhone were untouched.
